Charlene and I retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1984 and moved to beautiful Giles County, Tennessee, “The Land of Milk and Honey”.
The house and farm had not been lived on or worked for 25 years so we had a project. We purchased 6 cows in 1985 and have raised beef cattle ever since. We raised feeder pigs in the late 80’s until mid 90’s with a 150-sow herd.
Our beef cattle herd grew over the years and at one time we had 45 brood cows. In 2006 we were introduced to the Piedmontese Breed by a neighbor, Bradley Wood. He first got us to try the meat. And once we tasted the flavor, the tenderness, and also realized the Heart Healthy aspects of the meat, we were hooked. With the help of Richard and Melinda Sharpe, of Corryton, TN, and James Yoder of Paris , TN, we converted to a Full-Blood (pure bred) Piedmontese herd.
Both Charlene and I have completed the University of Tennessee’s Master Beef Producer Course. We are also BQA (Beef Quality Assurance) certified. We are members of the Giles County Cattlemen’s Assoc., Tennessee Cattlemen’s Assoc., National Cattlemen’s Beef Assoc., Tennessee Farm Fresh, Pick Tennessee Products and Tennessee Agritourism Association.
